Council moves ahead with parking meter fee increases
by John Koster The Ridgewood Council has voted to move ahead with a plan that, if approved in July, would double hourly parking fees, add to long-term parking at the Chestnut Street parking lot, and offer free shopper parking nights and Saturdays beginning this August. The ordinance was introduced last week despite a negative vote from Councilman Paul Aronsohn and opposition from Chamber of Commerce President Doug Seiferling and commercial landlord Ed Sullivan. The governing body also voted to defeat a somewhat different parking plan that had been scheduled for an adoption hearing. The new proposal follows the council’s decision not to proceed with a multi-tier parking garage on Walnut Street, a project that had been discussed for years and implemented by large amounts of legal fees, but dropped when the majority of the council felt that a building that size would detract from the appearance of Ridgewood. The ordinance as introduced would change the hours for Ridgewood’s parking meters from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The proposed ordinance sets the fees at 50 cent per hour, 10 cents for 10 minutes, and 20 cents for 15 minutes. The meter fee schedule would operate Monday through Friday with free parking all day Saturday and Sunday and weekday evenings after 6 p.m. “We have gone back and forth with this quite a bit,” said Mayor David Pfund. “We’re going to revisit it in six months and see how it goes.”
