Benjamin Franklin Middle School student Megumi Fuji recently designed the new logo that will be used to identify BF Safe Zones, places in the school where students can access trusted adults in the event of an emergency, or if they experience emotional distress. Fuji’s poster won the school-wide contest in which students were asked to create a logo symbolizing safety. The winning design, which shows a blue and green planet Earth with a smiling face and a rainbow and musical notes around it, will be displayed over the BF Safe Zones. The motivation for the poster contest and the designated safety zones came after a former BF student made an unauthorized entry into the school last year when he was

experiencing emotional distress. School officials moved quickly to protect the children, and called the police, who stopped the young man and referred him for assistance. No one was harmed, but the incident challenged BF staff members to think more about student safety and the need to communicate the message that BF is a place where students should feel safe and secure. BF advisors discussed the issues of safety and security openly with all of the students in the school, and students were encouraged to identify various BF Safe Zones. The students were then asked to participate in the logo design contest. Fuji’s design will be used to remind students that there are safe havens within the larger school environment.
