Stars shine brightly for local foster children
Two former foster children who are now celebrities in the hip-hop music world, recently inspired foster children at Children’s Aid and Family Services’ Children’s Motivational Awards dinner. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, of the legendary group Run-DMC, spoke and performed “Just Like Me” at the event. He is an adoptee, a strong advocate for adoptive children and a celebrity spokesperson for the agency. Model Shelly Rio, a former foster child in the care of Children’s Aid and Family Services, was the keynote speaker. The annual Children’s Motivational Awards dinner is a large family-style celebration, with awards given to the children to acknowledge their accomplishments and progress. “This is the agency’s way of saying ‘we’re proud of you,’ as well as motivating the children to persevere in their hard work and have respect for their accomplishments,” said Bob Jones, Ph.D., president & CEO of Children’s Aid and Family Services. “I’m thrilled that DMC and Shelly could share their personal experiences and be examples to the children of how much they can accomplish in life.” As a teenager, Rio lived in one of the agency’s group homes, and after “aging out” of foster care, held several jobs before becoming a model and actress in music videos. She is now married with two children and is eager to help children when they leave foster care and transition into adulthood. She shared her tale of survival and success with the children in the agency’s care. “Foster children usually have no birth family to help them when they turn 18 and graduate high school,” she said. “I want to help them have a fulfilling life like I have, not end up in trouble or homeless, which can easily happen to an 18-year-old with no support or guidance. Children’s Aid and Family Services is also deeply committed to helping these young adults who are aging out reach their potential and gives them a lot of support.” Children’s Aid and Family Services is one of the leading nonprofit human services organizations serving northern New Jersey. The agency is fully accredited and has served the community for more than 110 years. Its mission is to preserve, protect and, when needed, provide families. Motivated by compassion for vulnerable children, young adults, frail elderly and their families, it
