Candidates’ statements wanted Villadom Happenings Voter registration deadline nears The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election is Tuesday, Oct. 13. Voter registration applications are available at the local municipal clerks’ offices, New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices, and at njelections.org. Golf and tennis outing planned The “Roger E. Clarke Golf and Tennis Outing” will take place Oct. 19 at the Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell. The event is a collaboration of Wyckoff Family YMCA and the Wyckoff Education Foundation and will memorialize former school superintendent Dr. Roger E. Clarke. Proceeds will benefit the Y’s children’s programs and scholarship fund, and will help provide a college scholarship to a deserving high school senior. The outing will also support WEF, whose mission is to raise funds for programs, activities, services, and tools of learning that enhance educational excellence in the Wyckoff schools. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the second of a fourpart series of its fall/winter workshops on Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon. The workshop will be held in the meeting room located in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. These workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry whose members are dedicated to helping people who are seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. This next workshop topic is “Define Your Target Market.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Breast health to be discussed The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health will host a free program, “Breast Health: What You Should Know About Screening & Detection,” on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The 7 p.m. session will be held at The Valley Hospital Conference Center, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. When prevention is not possible, early detection is the key to protecting health. Lauren Levy, MD, radiologist, The Valley Hospital will speak on the latest innovations, including digital mammography, and research regarding preventing, screening, detecting, and diagnosing breast cancer. Knitting/crochet leader sought Bergen County 4-H and the Glen Rock Library are looking for a knitting/crocheting leader for a “tween” knitting and crocheting club. Quilter Guild to meet The Brownstone Quilters Guild, Inc. will hold its next meeting at both noon and 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, at the Central Unitarian Church, 156 Forest Avenue (at Howland Avenue), Paramus. Jo Diggs, the featured speaker at both sessions, has created appliqué landscapes for over 30 years. The noon lecture will be “Trunk Show” featuring two Ridgewood residents Kari Sharry, Elizabeth Clothier and Mary Adams decorate a holiday tree to be auctioned at the Junior League of Bergen County’s 25th Festival of Trees, ‘Cheers to 25 Years.’ Initially created as a holiday craft sale, Festival of Trees has become an annual fundraiser that includes dining, dancing, and more. In addition to the signature trees, an African Safari, grandstand tickets to the 2010 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, Hopper Passes to Walt Disney World, designer handbags and jewelry will be some of the auction items. Funds raised from the auction provide financial support to JLBC programs throughout the county. The evening’s festivities begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Hackensack Golf Club, 880 Soldier Hill Road, Oradell. Faith in Action underway Grace Church in Ridgewood will shut down Sunday service on Oct. 11 to allow volunteers from the church to perform acts of kindness throughout Ridgewood and surrounding communities for the Faith in Action weekend. Volunteers will be working at local schools, and at Ridgewood Social Services. Volunteers will also prepare and deliver dinners to 14 elderly assisted living residents.
